Born in Odessa, Ukraine in 1911, Jack Bookbinder immigrated to the United States and earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He continued his education and earned a MFA from the Tyler School of Art. Known as an illustrator and watercolorist, Bookbinder taught art at the Barnes Foundation, University of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
